Chapter 22

Clarke cut through the net with his knife. Charlie held the torch just close enough so he could see what he was doing. After cutting through the net, he cut the rope that bound Anton’s feet as well as the rope around his wrists.

“Move,” Ronan said, pointing an arrow to the dark tunnel at the base of the wall.

Anton’s expression was unreadable. “If you are going to kill me, why not do it now and get it over with?” he asked.

Ronan shrugged. “Not up to me. If I had it my way, I would have killed you when we first found you in that trap,” he said with a smirk.

The sounds of the night filled the air. It was still dark—close to midnight. Charlie moved toward the unlit torches that hung on the cave walls leading toward the Hole. She quickly lit them.

“And if I refuse?” Anton said scowling. The sudden change in lighting illuminated his face.

“Then you die.” Ronan took a step forward, so close that Clarke thought that their noses might touch.

In the light, Clarke could see Anton’s injury. The sleeve of his dark uniform was completely torn off, leaving a wet crimson stain on his ravaged flesh. The sight sent a cold shiver down Clarke’s spine. He felt a shot of pain in his own arm as he imagined what that injury might feel like.

“Just move… Or don’t. I don’t care. But if you don’t, can you hurry up and decide so we can kill you now and go to bed?” Myra said. Dark circles rimmed her eyes.

Another moment of intense staring passed.

“Fine,” Anton said finally breaking his stare and he began moving toward the cave.

They led the man to the entrance of the Hole; the cave where The Missing had been held not so long ago. Since it was empty, there were no guards out front. Clarke and Ronan pushed against the boulder that sealed the prison while Charlie and Myra held Anton, ensuring he wouldn’t escape.

After a few minutes of grunting and slowly moving the big rock aside, they led Anton into the dark room. Charlie used the torch to light the few that were inside the Hole. One by one, they lit up.

“What is this place?” Anton asked, looking around at the room that was chiseled out from solid rock.

“It’s your new home,” Ronan said dryly. “You will wait here while we decide what to do with you.”

Clarke sat the man on the ground, getting a good look at his wound. “I think we should have Beth come take a look at this.”

“Why? He’s a prisoner. We don’t make a habit of wasting medical supplies on them,” Ronan said.

“Well, if we don’t at least patch him up, he’ll get a nasty infection,” Clarke said as he once again bound Anton’s feet. “If he gets sick and dies, this whole night would be a waste of time.”

Ronan let out a loud sigh. “Fine. I’ll go get her.” He threw his hands up in the air and stormed out of the prison.
